Play Palace in Kerrisdale – May 26, 2012

It was a windy sunny day, probably the end of spring and the beginning of summer. We decided to have an event at Play Palace in Kerrisdale. We invited all the single mothers and their children from previous groups, the present group as well as those on our wait list. We had a total of about 15 children, their mothers and some mentors. It was an opportunity for the single mothers to connect in a social setting while their children could play in a safe environment.

The children had a great time, climbing inflated castles, jumping on bouncers, and riding cars and toys. There was lots of laughter and excitement.

We had a potluck lunch with tasty snacks and ice-cream. One of the mentors brought a delicious Black Forest Birthday cake which we all enjoyed in celebrating the birthday of one of the single mothers.

Christmas Party – December 16, 2011

This year’s Christmas party was an occasion for our single mothers from all groups, (Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4) to come together and enjoy the evening along with their children. They had an opportunity to connect with one another, share their experiences and some mothers even had a chance to get closer to their mentors! Joining us for this event and to celebrate the occasion there were the single mothers, their children, mentors, staff, volunteers and Andrew, the photographer. Of course no Christmas is complete without Santa Claus! Thomas, our Santa, lovingly gave out gifts to the children and single mothers.

The room was warm and inviting with lovely round tables decorated with Christmas plants and candles, a lit up Christmas tree, Christmas decorations all around and a variety of delicious finger foods such as appetizers, a Christmas cake and deserts. Special activities for the children included an arts and crafts corner and face painting, a huge favorite with the children! Kelly our volunteer did the face painting for children, which made delighted them as their faces were painted in colorful designs. The children were really excited and spent time playing with other kids. The evening started with single mothers and children getting comfortable, helping themselves with food and drinks and the evening concluded with gifts for all from Santa! This party surely made Christmas a great way to build bonds between single mothers and mentors and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Graduation Party for Group III, October 28, 2011

The Graduation Party for Group III was held at the Southmount Salvation Army Citadel where Ayumi Shilitto decorated the room with the help of a group of volunteers. The room looked beautiful. Eight single mothers graduated to a lovely celebration that started off with a great dinner of roast beef, ham, Caesar salad, scalloped potatoes, mixed vegetables, pumpkin pie and ice-cream. The certificates were presented followed by testimonies of how the program impacted the individual single mother families. There were a lot of emotional moments as the women shared their experiences.

Minister Ambrose’s Visit – January 12, 2011

We were honored to have Minister Ambrose visit us and find out more about the Single Mothers Breakthrough Program. It was an opportunity for her to meet a single mother who graduated from the first group. She also met Salvation Army personnel involved in the different programs at Family Services.
